RESUMO

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a post-surgery complication of cataract surgery, and lens epithelial cells (LECs) are involved in its development. A suppressive effect on LECs is exerted by the non specific chloride channel inhibitor 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino) benzoic acid (NPPB) exerts. Herein, the growth and migration inhibitory effects of NPPB on LECs were assessed, and the mechanism underlying the effects were investigated by focusing on Ca2+/CaMKII signaling. LECs were treated with different concentrations of NPPB, and the changes in cell viability, cell-cycle distribution, anchorage-dependent growth, migration, Ca2+ level, and CaMKII expression were evaluated. NPPB inhibited LECs' proliferation and induced G1 cell-cycle arrest in the cells. Regarding LECs' mobility, NPPB suppressed the cells' anchorage-dependent growth ability and inhibited their migration. Changes in cell phenotypes were associated with an increased intracellular Ca2+ level and down-regulation of CaMKII. Together these results confirmed the inhibitory effect of NPPB on the proliferation and migration of LECs, and the effect was shown to be associated with the induced level of Ca2+ and the inhibition of CaMKII signaling transduction.

This study aimed to explore the role of the long non-coding RNA NOTCH1-associated lncRNA in T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (lncNALT) in the pathogenesis of hypertensive retinopathy (HR). LncNALT expression levels were determined using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The effects of lncNALT knockdown on the viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion of human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (RMECs) were determined via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine staining, and Transwell assays. Protein expression levels were determined using western blotting. We found that lncNALT expression levels were increased in RMECs treated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), while the knockdown of lncNALT rescued the viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion of RMECs treated with H2O2. Moreover, lncNALT interacted with ELAV like RNA binding protein 1 to affect the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) expression. Knockdown of lncNALT enhanced the viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion of RMECs via the PTEN/phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/serine-threonine kinase (AKT) pathway. Taken together, knockdown of lncNALT enhanced the viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion of RMECs via the PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway, suggesting that lncNALT could be a potential therapeutic target for patients with HR.

Quantum coherence plays an important role in quantum information processing. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate the conversion of local and correlated Gaussian quantum coherence in the process of converting two squeezed states into an entangled state. We also investigate the relationship among total, local, and correlated coherence and show that the total coherence of a two-mode Gaussian state is the sum of local quantum coherence of each mode and the correlated quantum coherence between two modes. Our results highlight the connection of different quantum coherence in a two-mode Gaussian system and provide references for potential application.

As two valuable quantum resources, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement and steering play important roles in quantum-enhanced communication protocols. Distributing such quantum resources among multiple remote users in a network is a crucial precondition underlying various quantum tasks. We experimentally demonstrate the deterministic distribution of two- and three-mode Gaussian entanglement and steering by transmitting separable states in a network consisting of a quantum server and multiple users. In our experiment, entangled states are not prepared solely by the quantum server, but are created among independent users during the distribution process. More specifically, the quantum server prepares separable squeezed states and applies classical displacements on them before spreading out, and users simply perform local beam-splitter operations and homodyne measurements after they receive separable states. We show that the distributed Gaussian entanglement and steerability are robust against channel loss. Furthermore, one-way Gaussian steering is achieved among users that is useful for further directional or highly asymmetric quantum information processing.

Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) is not only a valuable timber species, but also plays an important role in the provision of ecosystem services. Forest management decisions to increase the production of fiber for economic gain may have negative impacts on the long-term flow of ecosystem services from forest resources. Such tradeoffs should be taken into account to fulfill the requirements of sustainable forest management. Here we employed an established, ecosystem-based, stand-level model (FORECAST) in combination with a simplified harvest-scheduling model to evaluate the potential tradeoffs among indicators of provisional, regulating and supporting ecosystem services in a Chinese-fir-dominated landscape located in Fujian Province as a case study. Indicators included: merchantable volume harvested, biomass harvested, ecosystem carbon storage, CO2 fixation, O2 released, biomass nitrogen content, pollutant absorption, and soil fertility. A series of alternative management scenarios, representing different combinations of rotation length and harvest intensity, were simulated to facilitate the analysis. Results from the analysis were summarized in the form of a decision matrix designed to provide a method for forest managers to evaluate management alternatives and tradeoffs in the context of key indicators of ecosystem services. The scenario analysis suggests that there are considerable tradeoffs in terms of ecosystem services associated with stand and landscape-level management decisions. Longer rotations and increased retention tended to favor regulating and supporting services while the opposite was true for provisional services.
